정수진 소장의 집들은 선과 면이 분명하다. 대담한 각도, 큰 덩어리의 벽면, 벽돌로 마무리한 외관이 마치 알바트로스(영화 ‘더 록’에 나왔던 사면이 바다인 감옥)를 연상케한다. 그러나 내부로 들어가면 전혀 다른 세계가 펼쳐진다. 잔디가 있는 안마당에 속옷을 입고 돌아다녀도 될만큼 외부 시선에서 자유로운 공간들이 이어진다.

“도심 주택에서 가장 필요한 것은 독립성 보장과 사생활 보호라고 생각합니다. 주택을 지으려는 건축주의 대다수가 아파트 공동 생활에 염증을 느껴 대안을 찾고자 나선 분들입니다. 자신만의 라이프스타일을 살리면서 자연과의 교감도 누리고 싶어하죠. 그 욕구를 해결해드리는게 집 짓는 이의 과제입니다.”

이런 건축주들에게 정 소장이 내놓은 대안 중 하나가 중정(中庭·건물 안이나 안채와 바깥채 사이의 뜰)이다. 이웃과 다닥다닥 붙은 도심 택지에서 서로 방해받지 않기 위해 외관을 벽으로 둘러싸더라도 내부에는 하늘을 보며 자연을 감상하고 가족 간 따뜻함을 나누는 안뜰을 배치하는 구조다. 여기에 한지 창호는 시간에 따라 굴절되는 빛의 깊이를 다르게 느끼며 고풍스런 한옥에 사는 것같은 착각도 불러일으킨다.

2011년 성남시 분당구 판교동에 지은 ‘하늘집’을 필두로 정 소장은 중정이 있는 주택을 10여 채 가까이 선보였다. ‘노란돌집’도 ‘하늘집’을 눈여겨 본 건축주가 직접 정 소장을 찾아와 의뢰한 프로젝트다.
그런데 집 한가운데 마당을 넣는다는 것이 말처럼 쉽지는 않다. 보통 집은 방(房)과 실(室)로 구성되는데, 벽으로 막혀 있고 문이 있는 것이 일반적인 방이라면, 실은 벽이 있거나 없을 수도 있고, 문이 있거나 없을 수도 있는, 조금은 느슨한 의미의 분리된 공간을 의미한다. 중정을 집어 넣는 순간, 이 모든 방과 실의 배치가 새롭게 이뤄져야한다.

“중정을 중심에 두고 설계를 하게 되면 공간의 손실이 클 수 있습니다. 사방으로 방과 실을 배치하다보면 불필요하게 좁고 긴 복도가 생기기도 하고, 필요한 기능을 연결하는 동선을 만들어내기가 쉽지 않죠. 노란돌집은 대지가 오각형으로 찌그러져 있는데다가 안방을 1층에 배치해야해 정말 머리가 엄청 아팠어요.”

정 소장의 엄살(?)과 달리, 노란돌집은 심미적으로나 기능적으로나 감성적으로 모두 만족스러운 집으로 탄생해 5년이 지났음에도 여전히 건축주의 사랑을 듬뿍 받고 있었다. 에디터와 함께 현장 취재에 동행한 정 소장은 “이렇게 한결같이 잘 정돈되고 당초 쓰임새대로 잘 사용되고 있는 집은 드물다”면서 “건축주가 집에 대해 얼마나 애착을 갖고 건축가와 시공사와 잘 소통해냈는지에 따라 결과물은 크게 달라진다”고 말했다.
정 소장은 노란돌집의 성과를 건축주에게 돌렸다. 작고 못난 땅이었지만, 건축가를 신뢰하고 소통해준 결과라고 설명했다. 담장을 두르지 못하는 규제를 수용하면서도 필요 공간을 확보하기 위해 1층 안방 외벽을 길가에 배치한 것과 당초의 원했던 노출콘크리트가 아닌 적층 모래돌로 외장 마감재를 바꾼 것 등을 끄집어냈다.

“지중해의 모래 적층돌로 외장을 마감한다는 것은 당시로서는 정말 새로운 시도였습니다. 세월이 지나갈 수록 되레 멋스러워지겠다는 게 제 판단이었는데, 비용이 다소 상승했지만 건축주가 흔쾌히 받아주셨어요. 그 성과가 지금 나타나는 것 같아요.”

정 소장의 예상대로 중정을 둘러싸고 바깥으로 배치된 방과 실의 외벽을 이룬 노란돌들은 5년이 지났음에도 크게 부식되거나 더러워지지 않고 오히려 부드럽고 따뜻하게 변해있었다. 시간이 지나 자신의 판단이 입증되고 설계한 집이 세월을 덧입어 더 아름다와진 모습을 보는 건축가의 마음은 어떨까.
정 소장은 “화려하게 덧댄다거나 꾸미지 않아도 본연적으로 아름다운 것은 시간이 지날수록 힘을 가진다”면서 “정직하게 지은 집이 세월이 갈수록 사랑받는다고 확신한다”고 말했다.
기능에 충실하면서도 사는 사람의 감성을 충만하게 하는 집, 그야말로 정직하고 힘이 있는 집이다. 건축가 정수진이 만들어낼 다음 집이 궁금한 이유기도 하다.

The houses of Architect Sujin Jung have distinct lines and planes. Their bold angles and massive brick walls are reminiscent of the Albatross, the ocean-bound prison from the movie The Rock. However, the inside of each building is a whole new world, a completely private area free from the prying eyes of the public.

“I think the most important thing when you build city houses is to protect independence and privacy. A lot of clients who want to build houses are people who are sick of big apartment complexes and are looking for alternatives. They want to make their own lifestyle and be a step closer to nature. Satisfying these desires is the architect’s challenge.”

One of the Jung’s solutions is the use of an inner garden-a yard between the inner and outer buildings. It is a space surrounded by walls that allows a family to enjoy nature and to share the warmth of the inner garden without interference from the outside. Windows covered with hanji (traditional Korean rice paper) bend the rays of light according to the time of the day, creating the illusion of an old hanok (traditional Korean house).

The client of the Yellow Stone House came to Jung thanks to her work the Spring House, Pangyo-dong, Seongnam, which Jung designed in 2011. Since the Spring House, the architect has created ten houses with inner gardens.
It is not easy to put a garden in the middle of a house. Most houses are composed of open rooms and closed rooms. The closed rooms are divided by walls and have a door as the opening. Open rooms may or may not have walls or doors. They are loosely divided spaces. With an inner garden, the division between an open and a closed room has to be redefined.

“There can be loads of space loss when you design a house with a inner garden. You can have unnecessary narrow, long alley-ways when you locate rooms around a garden. Or you’ll find it’s tricky to connect everything. This was a challenge since the site for the Yellow Stone House is a crooked pentagon shape and the master bedroom had to be on the first floor.”

Despite the challenges, Jung created a house with aesthetic, functional, and emotional appeal. Five years since its completion, it is still dearly loved by the clients. When BRIQUE’s editor visited the Yellow Stone House, Jung told her, “It is quite rare that a house is used as planned, with its original condition intact. Outcomes vary widely depending on the success of the client-architect communication.”

Jung thanks the client of the Yellow Stone House for its success. It was a result of trust and communication. She mentions a few things such as locating the first floor master bedroom by the street to ensure space and comply with restrictions, as well as changing the external finishes from exposed concrete to layered sandstone.

“Finishing the exterior with layered Mediterranean sandstone was something I was trying out for the first time. The idea was that it would become even better with time. The cost went up a little but the clients accepted it. The results are starting to show.”

As Jung had anticipated, the yellow stones on the exterior walls of the rooms surrounding the inner garden neither weathered nor corroded with time but rather took on a warmer, softer patina.
Imagine the feeling of reward for the architect, whose vision had turned out to be even more beautiful than hoped.
Jung says, “The original natural quality of the materials has its own power, with no embellishment needed. I am certain that natural, unaffected houses become more beloved over time.”
A house that satisfies functions and emotions is a house that is honest and powerful. At BRIQUE, we highly anticipate Jung’s next work.
