도심 속 공동주택은 경제적 수단으로서 기능하는 아파트와 아파트를 짓지 못하는 작은 대지에 지어지는 다가구, 다세대 주택이 주를 이루고 있다. 아파트는 대형 건설사 위주로 지어지면서 상대적으로 평당 공사비가 비싼 주거가 되었고 다가구, 다세대는 소형 규모에 의해 동네 시공업자들에 의해 싼 주거로 공급되어 왔다. 그렇지만 이 두 종류의 질이 차이 나게 되면서 양쪽의 장점을 얻을 수 있는 공동주거의 필요성이 관심을 받게 되었다.
Multi-unit housings in urban areas are mainly composed of two types; apartments which function as an economic means and multiplex housings built on the site that is not big enough for apartments.
Apartment building became relatively high-cost housing since it was mostly constructed by large construction companies. On the contrary, multiplex housing have been supplied at low price by small companies in smaller scales. However, as the quality gap between two types is widening over time, the need for multi-unit housing that holds the both advantage from each side has arisen.
건축주의 요구
건축주는 출판사로 쓰던 단독주택을 철거하고 아파트와 다가구, 다세대 중간 즈음의 주거를 제안해 달라고 의뢰하면서 주변 다가구, 다세대와는 차별화된 결과물을 원했다. 1층에는 출판사를 유지할 수 있는 작은 공간도 요구했다. 출판업이 아닌 건물을 지어서 일정 수익을 내기 위해서는 규모는 해당 대지에서 지을 수 있는 한 최대의 볼륨이 되어야 했고, 시공비는 적절해야한다는 기본 전제로 시작했다. 수익을 위해 작은 원룸으로 구성되지만 사는 사람들에게 최대한의 질적 공간을 배려하자는 공감대도 이뤘다.
Request from the Client
The client asked for a residence in-between apartment and multiplex housing after the demolition of existing house used as publishing company, and the result had to be differentiated from surrounding buildings. In addition, the client also requested for a small space on ground floor to maintain publishing work. To produce profit by constructing a building which is not for publishing, the volume of the building had to be maximized within the site. Also, progressing the construction within the reasonable amount of cost was the fundamental prerequisite. Although the building is composed of small studios resulting from the profit, the project started with a common aim to provide high spatial quality for the residents.
다양한 제안
작은 공간에 살면서 건물에 대한 생각과 각 세대와의 관계, 그리고 외부와의 관계를 무엇으로 연결해 줄 것인가가 건축 과정에서 드러나기를 바랐다. 대지 주변은 비슷한 규모의 다가구, 다세대 건물로 둘러싸여 있었다. 우리는 외관에 다른 특징을 부여하기 위해 도로 쪽으로 창을 두지 않도록 해 독특한 이미지를 만들어 냈다.
Diverse Proposals
We hoped that the ideas toward the building, the relationships between generations, and connection with exterior to be revealed through the progress. The building site was surrounded by other similar-scaled multiplex housings, therefore we decided to distinguish its characteristic by exterior. No window was put towards the road, and in result, unique appearance was created.
내부는 각 세대의 사생활을 확보하고 외부와 세대 중간에 있는 복도와 계단인 공용 공간에 중점을 뒀다. 건물에서 필요한 부분만을 남겨두고 최대한의 요소를 없애면 무엇이 읽혀질 것인가를 궁극적으로 이야기 하고 싶었다.
In terms of interior space, we focused on common space such as corridors between units and stairs while simultaneously keeping the privacy among units. The ultimate question was “What will we face after we take out most of the elements from the building while only leaving the necessary parts?”
계단의 벽과 세대 사이를 벌려 복도와 계단실에 빛과 바람, 그리고 식물의 움직임이 적극적으로 유입되기를 원했다. 그 속에서 내부는 외부로 열린 사이를 통해 변화되기를 바랬다.
We wanted light, wind, and movement of plants to flow into the corridor and staircase by widening the gap between the stair wall and units, consequently the interior space to change through the open gap.
그런 의도들을 가시적으로 인지하는 것을 도와주기 위해 두 명의 미술 작가들과 함께 설치 작업을 진행했다. 건물에서 미술작업이 잉여적 메타포로 평범해질 수 있는 공용 공간에 작은 파문을 만들어 주었다.
Lastly we proceeded installation work with two artists, in order to visualize the intention. An artwork creates a stir in the common space which could have been too stale.
내부의 작은 원룸 형태의 주거 공간에 방을 효율적으로 사용하기 위해서는 일반적인 크기와 볼륨을 갖고 있는 기성 가구들을 배치할 수는 없었다. 이에 침대, 책상, 조명을 방의 기능과 크기에 맞게 디자인하고 제작해 공간 활용도와 만족도를 최대로 높였다.
In order to make efficient use of small-sized residential space, ready-made furniture could not be used. We designed and produced bed, desk, and lighting according to the function and size of the room to improve spatial satisfaction.
작은 기대
도심지는 공동 주거의 형태가 획일화되면서 다양한 삶의 질을 필요로 하는 요구를 충족시키지 못한 채 기존 형식과 내용을 답습하고 있다. 이 프로젝트는 공동 주거의 척박한 환경에서 새로운 제안을 하고 작은 변화를 도모하기를 바라면 진행한 결과물이었다.
Small Hope
As the form of urban multi-unit housings has become monotonous, urban houses failed to meet the demands of various types of life. This project was proceeded with the hope of introducing new proposals and making small changes in the sterile urban housing environment.
