Walking into Orange Cube House in Hannam-dong Seoul, home of the Design Guild architects’ office, you feel like you’re in an exhibition hall. The space is full of a vast array of artwork, from concept sketches to 3D-printed house models and concrete crafts. Household goods such as vases, dishes, and toothbrush cases can be purchased there or ordered online. Suddenly curious about why the Design Guild is making these things, I ask, “What do you do?” Kwak answers, “I am an architect.” I ask again: “Why are you making these things?” and he responds, “It’s fun.”
Fun. It’s definitely one thing that Kwak’s houses have in common. Orange Cube, created by stacking marine shipping containers into a four-story building, is certainly original. Black House in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, a set of remodeled pointy-roofed 30-year-old houses, is unique. In Orange Cube, a space that Kwak also rents out, there are Soho business centers, craft workshops, and Airbnb rooms for overseas tourists. Everybody calls him the landlord, but Kwak is actually a supervisor. In response to concerns that he might not have enough time as an architect, Kwak explains that his artwork and other business are “something that makes architecture more fun.” It is not common for architects to live in the spaces that they design and witness firsthand the changes therein by bonding with the people using the space. For Kwak, this is a chance to experience the space as a user rather than as a designer, enabling him to communicate with clients more easily. After several hours of discussion with a client, he sometimes makes sketches and signs the contract on the spot.
Kwak’s houses are witty. Whimsical ideas come to life through his hands. Brick Cubes, an urban living facility in Jangchung-dong, Seoul, looks like a medley of adjoined brick houses. Each cube has a different color and layout, and the combination creates an odd but fun harmony. Meanwhile, Courtyard House in Janghyun-dong, Ulsan, is designed to reflect spaces for each member of the family who lives there, with blue and green open-ceiling rooms for the children, a home theater where the parents can relax, and an atrium where the whole family can gather. Kwak’s soon-to-be-completed micro-house in Yeonnam-dong is being constructed on an area of under 33m2 on a lot of less than 39m2. It is referred to as “micro” rather than “narrow lot.” Nevertheless, the basement of the building will feature a pool, a home theater, and a cafe for parties.
Kwak says, “If you take into account the perspectives and the lifestyles of the people who will live in the space, you can create a space fit for purpose regardless of the size.” For the Yeonnam-dong building, Kawk is also a client. He built the Yeonnam-dong house for his brother, who is returning to Korea from overseas.
Kwak has a magic wand he uses to turn his ideas into a model: a 3D printer that he purchased to create his made-to-order crafts. He now uses the printer to make building models. Not only are the models more precise and sophisticated than ones made of Styrofoam, but they save time. They serve as stand-alone pieces for Kwak. He first creates a simple model to explain the house to clients. Then, at the end of the process, he makes a miniature model to record his finished projects.
He says, “At the end of the day, I’m an architect. But according to the design, I also am an interior designer, a furniture designer, a lighting designer, and a product designer.” Staff at the Design Guild are multi-faceted in their approach to design. Manager Kyungil Park, the head of product design, remarks, “There are many ways to convey the design values of the Design Guild. Furniture, lighting and accessories are all part of the process of finishing the design.” On the Design Guild’s website, Kwak showcases a wide array of paintings and design works, including his own self-portrait. According to Kwak, “Studying and focusing only on architecture does not always lead to good architectural designs. Thinking about light and seeing it differently can stimulate the imagination, and can lead to a design that a real person can live in.”
