‘나비 집(Butterfly House)’을 처음 접한 사람들은 누구나 선입견을 먼저 갖게 된다. “아주 까칠한 갤러리 관장님같은 고상한 취미의 소유자를 위한 아주 비싼 집이어서 건축가가 정해놓은대로 한 치의 흐트러짐 없이 살아야 하기 때문에 불편하지 않을까”라고.
뾰족한 형태, 순백색·회색·검정의 통일된 색감, 좁아졌다 넓어졌다 치밀하게 계산된 듯한 긴장감 있는 외관, 여기에 다각도로 시선이 펼쳐지는 예사롭지 않은 내부 공간까지 합쳐져 선입견은 더 강화된다. 오해의 소지가 다분한 요소를 많이 갖고 있지만, 이 집의 주인은 부부와 아이 둘로 구성된 평범한 4인 가족이다.
남편은 집으로부터 멀지 않은 직장으로 출퇴근한다. 주말이면 집 안 곳곳에서 뚝딱뚝딱 무언가를 계속 만들어낸다. 공사 후 남은 철제 파이프와 계단 판을 이용해 벤치를 만들기도 하고, 뒷마당 옹벽에는 아이들을 위한 클라이밍 벽도 설치했다. 대문에서 집 안으로 올라오는 계단 중간층(mezzanine)에 설치된 공구실과 층고가 5m나 되는 차고 역시 이 집의 맥가이버인 남편을 위한 공간이다.
아내는 어릴적 단독주택에서 살면서 누렸던 추억이 자신의 아이들에게도 전해지길 원했다. 식구들이 직장이나 학교, 유치원으로 가고나면 그는 마당을 한 바퀴 돌며 산책을 한다. 앞마당 모래놀이터를 지나 자갈이 깔린 사이 마당을 따라 코너를 돌면 완벽히 가려져 있던 뒷마당이 나타난다. 이 곳은 낮에는 아이들이 농구를 하고 클라이밍 벽을 타는 놀이공간이지만, 밤에는 부부가 함께 맥주 한 잔 기울일 수 있는 야외 카페 역할을 한다.
코너를 돌면 수영장이 있는 앞마당이 다시 펼쳐진다. 집 주위를 둘러싼 앞 산을 내다보며 큰 호흡을 내쉰 뒤 아내는 이 집에서 가장 좋은 전망을 가진 부엌에 앉아 차 한잔을 마시며 그만의 일과를 시작한다.
밖에서 돌아온 후에도 여전히 에너지가 넘치는 아이들에게는 이 집 전체가 놀이터다. 앞마당에서 모래놀이를 하다 더워지면 수영장에 발을 담그고, 해가 넘어가면 잔디 위에서 공차기를 한다. 집 안 곳곳에는 감쪽같이 숨을 비밀의 공간이 많고, 숨은 아이를 찾기에는 집 전체를 훤히 내다볼 수 있는 2층 큰 아이 방이 제격이다. 아이들의 상상력을 자극하면서 숨바꼭질을 하기에도 나비 집은 안성맞춤이다.
건축가로서 ‘방은 네모다’라는 선입견을 갖지 않은 건축주를 만난 건 행운이었다. 건축주는 세모난 방이 가질 수 있는 장점을 이해했고, 새로운 공간에 설레어 했으며, 수영장이 온 가족을 위한 요소임에 확신을 갖고 있었다. 법적인 제약을 고려하고 채광과 전망을 한꺼번에 확보하기 위한 방법으로 뾰족한 형태를 도입하기로 결정하면서 기능적인 동선을 만드는데 고심을 거듭했다. 변화를 수용할 수 있는 여지를 만들고, 시각적인 개방감과 새로움을 끊임 없이 선사할 수 있는 디자인을 고민한 끝에 마침내 나비 집을 ‘완공’했다.
하지만 아직 ‘완성’은 아니다. 집은 사는 사람에 의해 채워지고 비워지기를 계속하면서 변화하기 때문이다. 나비 집 역시 완성을 향한 변화가 현재 진행형이다.

At the first glance, the Butterfly House might give a prejudice to onlookers that it is very expensive house where an arrogant director for a prestigious art gallery lives and you need to live meticulously as it is originally set by the architect. The pointy shapes, monotone colors, elaborately calculated exteriors, and odd looking interior space all add to its uniqueness. Despite these elements for misunderstanding, the owners of this house is an ordinary couple with two kids.
The husband commutes to work not far from the house. On the weekends, he makes or builds something in the house. He made benches using steel pipes and stair boards left from construction materials or he installed a climbing wall for kids at the retaining wall in the backyard. The tool shop at the mezzanine below the stairs and the garage which has 5m ceiling height are also for the handy husband.
The wife wanted to share her memories from her growing up in the detached house with her kids. When the families leave for work or school, she would stride the yard. Walking past the sandbox in the front yard, and turning the corner of the house along the yard with pebbles, there is a backyard that is completely hidden from the outside. This is a space where in the day it’s a playground for kids to play basketball and do wall climbing, and at night, it’s an outdoor café where couple can have beer. Around the corner to the front yard, there is a swimming pool overlooking the mountain. The wife would sit in the kitchen with the best view in the house enjoying a cup of tea and start her day.
To kids with full of energy, the whole house becomes a playground. When you get hot playing in the sandbox, they can dip themselves in the swimming pool and in the cool evenings, they would play ball on the grass. There are many hiding spots in the house but from the room upstairs where you have overall view of the house, you can find the hidden spots. This house is built to stimulate children’s imaginations.
The architect thinks that it was her luck to meet a client who has a stereotype that the room always should be a square. The clients understood the advantages of a triangle shaped room and were excited about the new space. They were also convinced that the pool is essential for everybody. The architect decided to introduce pointy shapes to take into consideration of the legal limitations, lighting, and view at the same time, and made efforts in creating functional lines. At last, she completed the Butterfly House which can take in the changes, and provide visual openness and originality.
However, it is not perfect yet. The house is fulfilled when it is constantly filled and emptied by the lives of people. The Butterfly House is also in the process of completion.
