2012년 KINFOLKS STUDIO와 ㈜공감건축사사무소로 시작되었습니다. 2012년도부터 한국 도시주거의 새로운 대안을 찾기 시작했으며, 척박한 건설환경에서 젊은 건축가의 역할과 자립을 위한 방법과 대안에 대하여 고민하였습니다. 2012년 이전의 서울은 정부 및 건설사 주도의 공동주택과 집장사가 지은 도시형생활주택을 주축으로 소수의 상류층만이 건축가가 지은 고급 단독주택을 선택하여 살고 있었습니다. 대부분의 사람들은 공동주택과 도시형생활주택에서 살고 있으며, 개인이 땅을 사서 집을 짓는 경우가 드물었습니다.

우리는 이런 도시환경에서 중간영역의 새로운 주거 모델을 만들고자 일본에서 지어진 협소주택을 착안하여 한국형 협소주택(積恩集)을 만들기 시작하였습니다. 積恩集(협소주택)은 고급 단독주택과 저렴한 도시형생활주택의 중간영역으로, 고급주택에서 사용한 디자인과 디테일을 많은 사람들이 생활하고, 경험할 수 있게끔 디자인 된 주택입니다. 기존의 공동주택이 1개의 대형사무실에서 다수의 필지를 계획한 주거형태였다면, 積恩集(협소주택)의 활성화는 젊은 건축가들이 여러 필지에 다양한 상상력을 펼칠 수 있는 실험적 장을 마련해줄 것이라 생각합니다. 이러한 시도를 통해 우리나라의 건축환경 개선과 도시주거의 다양성이 확보될 것으로 생각합니다.

GONGGAM & KINFOLKS는 2012년도에 새로운 도시주거 대안으로 積恩集 H4912를 발표하고, 매년 다수의 협소주택과 다양한 용도의 건축을 작업하고 있습니다. 2017년, 부산 동래구 안락동에 지은 積恩集 BDA63297은 동래건축문화상 우수상으로 선정되었습니다. 앞으로 개별의 건축을 집합의 건축으로 확장하고, 새로운 도시주거모델 대안, 빈집마을, 건축학교, 매거진 등 다양한 형태의 실험을 진행중이며, 다각적 시선에서 도시재생 활동에 참여할 계획입니다.

GONGGAM&KINFOLKS was established as two firms, Kinfolks Studio and Gonggam Architects Co. Ltd. in 2012. Since 2012, we have endeavored to look for an alternative option for Korean urban residential type. Alongside with it, we have agonized over the issue related to the role of the young architects and their independence within poor built environment industry in Korea. Before 2012, most of the residential buildings were overwhelmed by apartment buildings which were planned and designed by the major developers and government. Following the apartments, three to four level multi-unit residential buildings which are commonly called as ‘Korean Villa’ were the second most common and popular residential type as they were regarded as a good form of investment. It was very rare case for the majority people to buy a plot of a land and build a house designed by an architect, henceforth, they lived in these two forms of residential building. Only few affluent people were able to dwell in the houses designed by architects.

As a respond to this devastating reality, we have started to design Korean version of ‘Micro house’. It was initially motived by Japanese Micro house and transformed to be suited to the conditions in Korea, introducing another option of residential type in the urban area. I would like to say the form of ‘Micro house’ is the ideal compromise between high-end residential and affordable multi-unit residential building. The details of the high-end houses are applied to the design of Micro houses for those regular people to experience and dwell in. The conventional multi-unit residential buildings were planned over multiple plots. As a consequence, only major giant firms could manage to run the projects. However, as Micro House which is built on a single plot of land, provide the ground for many of young architects to explore their creativity and imagination through various projects. Through this kind of development and effort, we expect that there will be a huge improvement in the architectural culture and diversity in residential design.

GONGGAM & KINFOLKS have proclaimed Micro House H4912 as an alternative residential type and have been working over multiple Micro houses and other projects in different sectors every year. In 2017, Micro house BDA63297 that we designed in Anrack-dong, Dongrase-gu in Busan won the second place in Dongrae architecture award. Gonggam have set our goal to expand individual architecture to collective architecture. Also, we are undertaking various experiments such as introducing new residential type and conducting abandoned village revitalization project, providing architecture school and architecture magazine for non-experts. Furthermore, we are planning to take part in urban revival program with various approaches.

이용의 Youngeui Lee | 소장

서울과학기술대학교 및 동대학원 졸업하고, 유신건축, 간삼건축 및 김영준도시건축에서 실무를 쌓았다. 2012년도 積恩集(협소주택) 프로젝트 실험을 위해 부동산 경매에 참여하여 후암동에 18평의 작은 땅을 낙찰 받아 첫 프로젝트 積恩集 H4912를 진행하였다. 앞으로 건축을 부동산이 아닌 공적 개념의 건축문화로 변화시키고자, 건축가의 사회적 역할과 건축의 문화적 측면에 관심을 갖고 작업을 진행하고 있다.

Young-eui Lee received a Master of Architecture and bachelor of Architecture from Seoul National Technology University. He worked in Yooshin Architects, Gansam Architects and Kim Young Joon Urban design before establishing Gonggam Architecture. He has participated in an auction to won a plot of land in Hooam-dong for his first experimental Micro house project. It is his first ever built Small house, H4912. To transform the image of residential building from ‘property’ to ‘collective cultural asset’ in Korean society, he runs projects, emphasizing on the responsibility of architects in the society and the impact of architecture that would have on our culture.

최연정 Yeonjung Choi | 프로젝트 매니저

서울과학기술대학교에서 건축을 전공하고, 창조건축에서 실무를 쌓았다. 積恩集 H4912협소주택 프로젝트를 시작으로 다수의 설계를 진행하고 있으며, 현재 이용의소장, 송기덕 소장과 함께 공감건축사사무소를 운영하고 있다.
도시와 사람들의 움직임을 만들어내는 상업 및 업무시설 등에 관심이 많으며, 도시적 맥락에서 건축법과의 관계와 행정제도에 관하여 연구를 진행하고 있다.

Yeon-Jung Choi received a bachelor of Architecture from Seoul National Technology University and started her career as an architect in Changjo Architects. She is running Gonggam Architecture with Ki-Deok Song and Yong Eui Lee. She shows profound interest in the commercial building and work place which can create the movements of people and urban area. She is currently undergoing a research on the relationship with building code and administrative regulation in urban scale.
