Seoul Hall of Urbanism & Architecture connects and reveals the historical moments of different heights around the site. Most of the facilities are located underground corresponding to three existing levels – previous existing building basement, underground walkway, and City Hall basement. The roof, extended horizontally from the stone wall of Deoksugung Palace, is integrated with the Seoul Anglican Cathedral front yard to become a visual foundation to reveal the hidden back side of the cathedral. The building also serves as a gate connecting the ground and the underground, and enables to experience various historical levels in one space.
Plaza on the roof
The rooftop plaza was planned as unified plaza expanding to a front yard of the Anglican Cathedral, and same material was used for paving at the front yard of the municipal council, and surrounding sidewalks and roads. The plan changed during the construction, and the plaza is disconnected with steps. On the rooftop, the trace of the old road and the junction was reconstructed with different paving material, and it is possible to view the Seoul Plaza from the traces of modern history. One of the columns was left from the demolished previous building and other columns are cut into same level with the plaza to become a background of citizen’s
Atrium at the basement
The two previous entrances for underground walkway are demolished, and brought into the building to connect City Hall basement and subway station directly at level B2. Underground stairs and atrium are designed to outside space to work as the gate between the ground and the underground.
All exhibition spaces have double height space to integrate multiple levels. The large atrium in level B3 integrates four different levels up to ground floor, and is surrounded by high walls. Among them, the wall in the direction of Deokguk Palace is the main wall facing the atrium along the main stair access, and the balconies of each level.
In the future, an exhibition showing the accumulated level of the city should be planned, and it is expected that the experience of the space integrating the accumulated memories in different times will be achieved.
