질문의 시작
“저의 요구사항은 딱 하나에요. 이 동네에 없는 디자인을 해주세요.”
2018년 겨울, 9년간 파리에서의 생활을 정리하고 귀국을 준비하던 중, 단 하나의 요구사항을 가진 클라이언트의 연락을 받았다. 오늘날의 건축에서 ‘이 동네에 없는 디자인 (혹은 새로운 디자인)’이란 것이 과연 존재할까, 클라이언트의 요구사항에 오히려 되물어보는 질문을 스스로에게 던졌다. 건축은 이미 오랜 세월을 거쳐 수많은 실험과 경험을 통해 무수히 많은 ‘디자인’을 만들어내지 않았나. 그러니 ‘이 동네에 없는 디자인’ 에 대한 해답보다는, 먼저 근본적인 질문이 필요하다고 생각했다.
The Start of a Question
“I have only one request. I want a design that has never existed in this town.”
In the winter of 2018, as I was preparing my return to Korea after 9 years in Paris, I was contacted by a client who claimed to have only one request. Within the context of the contemporary world of architecture, I questioned myself if “a design that has never existed in this town” or “a new design” is even a possibility. Architecture has already created a great number of “designs” over the course of history through countless experiments and experiences. Thus, I thought a fundamental question was in need, instead of an outright answer to the request for “a new design.”
대지는 강화대로에서 한 블록 안에 숨어 있는 넓은 주차장의 모서리에 있었다. 강화 읍내의 중심에 위치하지만, 대로변에서는 보이지 않고, 지역 주민들이 자주 이용하는 생활도로가 주차장을 가로 질러 지나간다. 대지 뒤쪽의 작은 골목길과도 연결되어 있어, 주변 이웃들의 이동이 잦은 장소이다. 또한 주변은 온통 크고 작은 주택, 상업시설로 둘러싸여 있어 프로그램(상업시설과 주택)의 지리적, 환경적 장단점이 서로 섞여 있는 곳이다. 이러한 제약과 환경은 장소의 성격을 만들어내고, ‘이 동네에 없는 디자인’을 ‘이곳에서만 가능한 디자인’으로 자연스레 질문의 답변을 찾아냈다.
숨어 있는 공간
각각의 공간은 다음 공간을 위한 켜(layer)의 역할을 한다. 1층 카페는 거친 벽에 의해 숨겨져 있다. 주차장과 5층 높이의 상업시설을 마주 보고 있어 외부를 향해 오픈된 공간 보다는 내부로 시야가 집중되는 공간이 필요했다. 거친 콘크리트 벽은 그 앞을 지나가는 이들에게는 궁금증을, 방문객들에게는 고요하게 둘러 쌓인 공간을 만들어 준다.
Hidden Space
Each space takes on the role of a layer that sets up the next. The café on the first floor is hidden by a rough concrete wall. Since the project faces a parking lot and a 5-story commercial building, it needed an introverted space than a space that looks outwards. The concrete wall intrigues passersby while offering tranquility to visitors.
콘크리트 벽과 카페 공간 사이의 작은 전이 공간은 내부공간으로의 채광을 가능하게 하고, 복잡한 외부로부터 보호한다. 카페 홀로 들어서게 되면 안쪽에 숨은 또 다른 외부공간이 나타난다. 방문객들만을 위한 이 작은 정원은 내부공간에 시각적 확장성을 만들어 주며 계절의 변화를 느끼게 한다.
The transitional space between the concrete wall and the café allows natural light to infiltrate into the interior, and provides protection from the busy exterior. Should a visitor enter the café hall and proceed inwards, there is another hidden outdoor space. This garden, designed only for visitors, visually extends the interior space, and allows the visitors to experience the changing seasons.
경계
2층 단독주택의 거실과 침실은 문(열리는 벽)을 통해 합쳐지고 나뉘어 진다. 거주공간에서 가변적 성격의 구조는 제한된 공간의 확장성을 갖게 한다. 30평 남짓한 단독주택은 부엌-거실과 방-발코니로 구분된 ㅡ자 구조이지만, 문(열리는 벽)을 통해 하나의 공간으로 확장된다.
Boundary
The living room and bedroom of the single-family house on the second floor can be joined or divided through a door—rather a wall that opens and closes. The structural flexibility within a residential space ensures expandability of the limited floor area. The house, about 100㎡ in floor area, has a linear structure comprised of a kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, and a balcony, which can be joined into a single space by opening the walls.
이는 특히 거실에서 낮의 해와 해질녘 석양을 모두 담을 수 있게 한다. 발코니와 만나는 곡선 입면은 외부로부터 거주공간을 보호하고, 동시에 내부로 자연채광을 가능하게 한다. 곡선에 의해 침실에 그려지는 빛과 그림자의 모양은 시간의 변화를 느끼게 하여 작은 주택 공간에 다채로운 그림을 그려낸다. 경사 지붕을 따라 만들어진 높은 천정고는 협소한 수평 공간의 면적을 수직적으로 넓혀 거실과 부엌에 개방감을 주고, 경사 끝자락의 침실은 아침 햇빛으로 밝히기 충분한 공간을 만들어 낸다.
This allows the living room to catch both daytime sun and sunset. The curvilinear façade that meets the balcony protects the residence from the externalities, and brings natural light into the interior. The light and shadow that changes over the course a day provides an everchanging experience of the bedroom for the residents. The high ceiling height created by a pitched roof vertically expands the horizontally limited space in order to open up the spatiality of the living room and kitchen, and the bedroom towards the end of the pitch becomes a space that fills up with the morning sun.
언어
수평과 수직, 직선과 곡선의 형태 언어는 땅이 가진 장소성을 바탕으로 그려졌다. 대지 뒤편 서로 다른 방향들의 종착점과도 같은 땅에 시작과 끝을 알리는 수평과 수직의 선은 주변 마을을 감싸듯 정면을 바라보고 있다. 기존의 생활도로를 지나가는 이들은 마을의 새로운 이정표를 보게 되고, 작은 골몰을 지나 접근하는 이들은 곡선으로 인한 수직적 상징성을 인지하게 된다. 각각의 요소는 자기만의 표피를 갖는다. 수평의 면을 만드는 벽은 거친 콘크리트, 곡선의 볼륨감은 전벽돌 그리고 지붕은 징크로 마감하여 전체적인 통일감을 갖고 그 형태 언어를 완성한다.
Language
Horizontal and vertical, rectilinear and curvilinear—the formal language of the project is derived from the site itself. The site is a destination of different directionalities, facing front while embracing the surrounding town with its horizontal and vertical lines. Each element has its own skin. Concrete with a rough finish is used for horizontal planes, and brick for the volumetric curves. Zinc is chosen as the roof material to create a sense of uniformity, and completes the formal language.
