봄비를 흠뻑 머금은 무창리에 봄뜻이 그윽하게 퍼지던 날, 순한 산세가 아늑함을 주는 너르고 따스한 대지에서 40대 후반의 딩크 부부를 만나게 되었다. 도심 생활에서 벗어나 작은 공간이어도 호젓하고 여유를 즐길 수 있는 전원생활을 꿈꾸고 있던 그들. 마당 한편에서 텃밭을 일구고 길게 빠진 처마 아래서 남편이 정성껏 내린 드립 커피를 함께 마시며 담소를 나누고 싶어 하는 소박한 바람을 갖고 있었다.
When a day has spring feeling and wet after raining in Muchang-ri, we met a late 40’s dink couple on a wide and warm site which has cozy atmosphere with moderate mountain. They were dreaming a rural life depart from city life that quiet and can enjoy composure while even small space. They had honest wishes such as tending vegetable garden on aside of courtyard and drinking husband made elaborate drip coffee under the eaves.

이 부부에게는 계획 초기부터 무척 독특한 요구 사항이 있었는데, ‘집의 모든 공간에서 서로의 모습을 바라보고 싶다’는 조건이 바로 그것이었다. 미팅 초기에는 서로의 ‘일거수 일투족’을 감시하기 위해 그런 요구를 하는 것으로 느껴져 참 특이하다 생각했지만, 이야기를 듣다 보니 딩크족인 그들은 무언가를 항상 함께 하는 생활에 익숙해져 그러한 생활 패턴이 공간 구조에서도 고스란히 묻어 나오길 원하고 있다는 것을 알게 됐다.

The couple had a special requirement from initial stage of planning, that was ‘Desire staring each other in everywhere at home’. I thought that was unusual because I understood their prerequisite as a means for surveillance each other. However, as time goes by listening their story, they got used to spending time together every time as dink couple. Then, I got to know that they wanted spatial structure reflecting their life pattern.
집은 살고 있는 사람들의 삶이 그대로 투영되는 공간이기에, 어떠한 건축물보다도 섬세하고 꼼꼼하게 재단해 나가야 한다는 것을 설계 과정에서 다시금 느꼈다. 이 집은 모진 부분 없이 모든 공간이 부드럽게 흐르는 동선을 가지고, 마당을 가득 채우는 햇살의 온기가 온 집안에 담뿍 담길 수 있었으면 했다. 부부의 도란도란 이야기 소리가 은은하게 집안 곳곳에 스미는 공간을 조금씩 심상에 담기 시작했다.
I was hooked again that I need to plan house delicately and meticulously than other kind of building because house reflects life of people who live in as it is. It was intended that house has smooth-flowing circulation without sharp corner on any space and is filled with warmth of sunlight which fills up courtyard. I started to fill an image with space is pierced couple’s murmuring sound faintly in everywhere of house.
마당과 내부 공간의 유기적 공간 구조
이 집에는 딱히 방이라고 칭할 만한 공간이 없다. 1층의 모든 공간은 유기적인 형태와 구조를 가지고 마당을 향해 열려 있는데, 마당은 이 집에서의 모든 기능이 확장되는 배경이자 구심적인 역할을 하는 공간이다. 주방-주출입구-거실을 잇는 공간 모두 중정을 향해 열려있어 모든 공간이 밝고 따스하며 중정과 시각적, 공간적으로 긴밀하게 연결될 수 있도록 했다.
1.2~2m 이상 길게 드리워진 처마는 집 안 깊숙이 들어오는 여름 햇살을 막아주기도 하고, 비 오는 날 처마 끝에서 떨어지는 빗물을 바라보며 ‘멍’을 때릴 수 있는 여유를 주는 공간이 되기도 한다. 특히 마당 중앙에 심은 살구나무는 아름다운 계절의 전이를 집안 곳곳에 스며들 수 있도록 클라이언트 부부와 건축가가 함께 그 위치와 수종을 고심 끝에 선정하였다.
Organic spatial structure of courtyard and interior space
There is no space as room in this house. All of space on the 1st floor have organic form and structure, also they are opened toward the courtyard. The yard is a background which includes expanding all function of this house and a space which plays a centripetal part. Entire space connecting kitchen – enterance – livingroom is opening toward courtyard, thus all space are bright and warm also are interconnected compactly with courtyard visually and spatially. The eaves that is pensile over 1.2m~2m prevents summer sunlight entering deep inside and become a space provide relaxation by watching raindrops dropping from edge of the eaves. Especially, the apricot tree in the center of courtyard was selected by the client and architect by considering it’s location and kind of tree to permeates transforming of a season into whole space in the house.
침실 속 숨겨진 문을 통해 새로운 공간을 마주하다
2층은 가장 프라이빗한 공간인 부부를 위한 침실이다. 이 집에서 가장 아름다운 원경을 바라볼 수 있는 공간이자 1층의 공간과는 또 다른 차원의 공간감과 시각적 확장을 주는 공간이다. 단 차이가 나는 침상에 걸터앉으면 외부로부터의 시각적인 간섭 없이 원경을 바라볼 수 있는 부부만의 공간이 된다.
Meet up a new space through a hidden door in the bedroom
The second floor is the most private bedroom for the couple. They can take a view the most beautiful scenery in the house at this space also has different dimensional spatial impression than the 1st floor and provides visual expansion. When sit on the bed has level difference they can watch a distant view without interference of view in their own space.
2층의 구조는 낮은 박공지붕의 형태로 아늑하면서도 마치 경치가 좋은 캠핑장에 누워 휴식을 취하는 느낌이 들기도 한다. 침실 뒤쪽으로 숨겨진 문을 통해 옥상으로 올라서면 옥상에 마련된 데크로 연결된다. 이 집에서 가장 개방된 공간이자 집 주변의 아름다운 경관을 한 눈에 바라볼 수 있는 곳으로 식재료를 손질하고 말리는 공간이 되기도 하는 등 다양한 활용성을 염두에 두고 그 영역을 잡아 놓았다.
The structure of the second floor is a low gable roof form and they can feel like having a rest in a camping site which is cozy and scenic. They can enter the rooftop covered deck through a hidden door behind the bedroom. The rooftop is the most open place in this house and it is possible to look surrounding beautiful scenery of the house. We planned that place considering diverse utilizations such as trimming and drying food ingredients.
저녁에도 프라이버시가 유지되는 내부화된 마당
집의 주변은 여느 전원주택과는 다른 형태와 공간 구조를 갖고 있다. 보통 남측으로 너른 마당을 두고 북측으로 건축물을 배치하는 형태를 취하고 있지만, 이 집은 대지 전체를 한 번에 포근히 안는 형태의 담과 담양에서 공수해 온 60mm 지름의 구운 대나무로 그 경계를 크게 둘렀다. 남향을 무작정 고수하기 보다는 실내의 모든 공간이 마당을 품게 해 실내공간에 균질하게 밝은 빛이 들게 하고 경관이 좋은 곳을 향해 2층부의 시선을 활짝 열어 놓았다.
밤이 되어도 여느 전원주택처럼 블라인드나 커튼을 치고 않고도 내부화된 마당에서 가족들이나 집에 놀러 온 손님들과 안전하고 아늑한 공간에서 외부의 간섭 없이 외부공간을 즐길 수 있고, 때에 따라서는 대나무담을 열어 마을과 소통할 수 있게 하는 통로의 역할을 할 수 있는 것이다. 인근 지역에서 쉽게 구할 수 있는 자연적인 소재의 물성을 이용한 대나무 입면은 한결 푸근하면서도 차분한 느낌으로 주변과 자연스럽게 녹아간다.
Internalized courtyard maintaining privacy even in the evening
Surroundings of this house have different shape and spatial structure with ordinary rural house. Rather than place courtyard on the south and building on the north as normal, this house is surrounded with embracing wall and 60mm diameter roasted bamboo transported from ‘Damyang’ around the boundary of entire site. Instead of keeping to the south facing, make whole interior space to embrace courtyard for getting homogeneous sunlight into the interior space. Furthermore, opened the second floor view widely toward the gorgeous landscape. They can enjoy the exterior space with their family or guests through the internalized garden safely without intervention of others, even doesn’t need to close blinds or curtains. On the other hand, it can be a passage communicating with village at times by opening the bamboo wall. The bamboo elevation by using accessible natural material from nearby area melts into surroundings smoothly and genially.
사용 승인이 나고 준공 사진을 찍던 어느 오후, 클라이언트와 침실 침상에 걸터앉아 집 앞 원경을 아무 말 없이 응시했다. 그 잠깐의 침묵 뒤 이어진 클라이언트의 말 한마디에 건축가가 맛볼 수 있는 최고의 보람과 함께 그 간의 모든 체증이 씻겨 내려가는 듯했다. “이 공간이 너무 좋습니다. 소장님!”
One afternoon, when we were taking photos after getting approval of use, stared at the distant view as sitting on the bed quietly. After that the silence, client’s one word made me feel the best reward as an architect and solve the indigestion in the meantime. “I love this space so much.”
