Chapter1. Identity
상수역을 중심으로 확장해 가는 상업 가로街路의 정체성 분석
카멜레존Chamele zone은 젊은 기업의 사옥겸 쇼룸이다. 온라인에 기반을 둔 이 회사의 성장세는 가늠하기가 어려웠다. 실제로 설계도중 인접부지를 추가로 매입하였고, 준공할 즈음은 늘어난 직원들 때문에 사무공간을 더 확장해야 하는 지경이었다. 이 변화무쌍한 클라이언트를 대하는 설계자는 당혹스러웠고, 특히 쇼룸은 다양한 제품과 시시각각 변화하는 소비자의 니즈에 부합하는 그런 공간을 설계해야 했다.
Analysis of the Identity of Commercial Streets that are expanding around Sangsu Station
Chamele zone is a young company’s office building and showroom. It wasn’t easy to assess the growth of this online based company. The company also purchased the adjacent site during the design, and by the time of completion, we had to expand office space due to the increased staff. Dealing with this ever-changing client, the designer was embarrassed and had to design a showroom that satisfies a variety of products and the needs of ever-changing consumers.
홍대 부도심의 확장선상에 놓인 상수역 주변거리는 아직 그 성격이 애매모호해 상수역을 중심으로 서측 지역은 당인리 발전소의 공원화 계획과 함께 상업화가 많이 진행되었지만, 대지가 위치한 동측 지역은 어떤 가로가 될지 아직은 미지수다. 분석한 그림에서 보듯 상권이 형성되어가는 과정에 있으며 그를 증명하듯 개발을 기다리는 나대지가 상당수 남아 있다.
The characteristics of the neighborhood street around Sangsu Station, commercially expanded from the downtown area of Hongik University, is still ambiguous. From the western area around the Sangsu Station, commercialization has progressed along with the Dangin-ri Power Plant’s park planning. However, it is still unclear how the vicinity on the east side of the station will change where the project site is located. As the analysis shows, the business district is in the process of formation, and as it proves, there is still a lot of land waiting for development.
이렇듯 장소의 정체성이 불분명할 경우 건축가의 책임은 늘 막중하다. 자칫 새로운 건물이 그 가로의 성격을 규정짓는, 지역의 문화적 유전자로 자리 할 수 있기 때문이다. 이는 설계하는 과정내내 중요한 키워드로 작용했다.
So if the identity of a place is unclear, the responsibility of architects is always enormous. A new building can be a local cultural landmark that defines the street’s character. This possibility served as an essential keyword throughout the design.
Chapter2. Use of empty space
최대 용적과 그외 공간 활용
대지는 2종 일반주거지역으로 일조권의 제약과 불규칙한 지적선에 의하여 다양한 층별 평면을 갖게 되었다. 최대의 용적을 확보하면서 변화에 대응가능한 공간의 계획은 아이러니하게도 일조권 사선제한이라는 규제에 의해서 탄생되었고 이는 변화무쌍한 건축물에 상당한 기여(?)를 하게 된다.
Maximum Volume公 Utilization of Other Spaces
The site belongs to Class II General Residential Area and has a variety of floor plans due to the limitations of the right to sunshine and irregular lot lines. The spatial layout, which can respond to changes while securing the maximum volume, was ironically created by the setback regulation for the right of light, which contributes significantly to the kaleidoscope of this building.
오래된 동네의 지적선은 다양한 레벨과 함께 사선제한으로 규제되어 건축을 못하게 되는 공간들이 자연스럽게 생겨났고, 우연히 발견된 이 공간들은 옛날 동네의 가로와 많이 닮아 있어서 오히려 장소의 정체성을 찾는데 도움이 되었을 것으로 본다. 결국 건축가는 이를 더 활용하여 내부공간도 허가면적(?)에서 제외되는 보이드 공간을 도입하였다.
Often the old city’s parcel lines create a space that could not be built on, mainly due to Architectural Slant Line Restriction for Daylight and various levels. And these coincidentally discovered spaces resemble the streets of the old town, apparently helping to find the place’s identity.
Eventually, the architect used it to create a void space in which the indoor space excluded from the permit area(?).
각층 평면은 다양한 서비스 면적(허가 제외 면적)을 도입하면서 설계가 완성되었을 때는 이 면적이 전체 연면적의 15%에 육박 하였다. 더욱이 각층에 골고루 분포돼 각각의 공간마다 조망, 채광, 또는 부피감 등으로 사용자와 친밀한 공간이 될 것이다. 이 공간들은 변화에 대응하는 건축의 중요한 역할을 할 것으로 기대한다.
As shown in the figure, each floor area approached 15% of the total floor area when the design completed by adopting various service areas (permit-free area).
Moreover, it will be distributed evenly on each floor so that each space will be intimate with users due to its view, light, or volume. These spaces expected to play an important role in architecture in response to changes.
Chapter3. Sustainable Material
변화에 대응할수 있는 지속가능한 재료와 매스에 대한 연구
불규칙한 지적선은 오히려 역동적인 평면을 탄생시켰고, 이러한 평면은 자연스럽게 입체적인 단면으로 전개가 되었다. 불규칙한 매스의 건축물 외장재는 규격화 하기가 매우 힘들다는 점은 경험에서 알고 있던 터라, 주재료를 벽돌로 결정하게 되었다. 벽돌은 인류가 최초로 직접 제작한 건축 재료라는 의미도 있지만, 작은셀들이 모여 덩어리를 형성한다는 점에서 이 건물에 적용하기에 상당히 매력적인 재료였다. 또한 쌓기 방법에 따라 가로와 대응하는 남측면에 반투명한 레이어를 형성하기에 적당한 재료이기도 했다.
A Study on Sustainable Materials and Masses in Response to Changes
Irregular lot lines created rather dynamic plans, which are naturally developed into three-dimensional cross-sections. From my experiences that it is challenging to standardize the exterior materials of an irregular mass building, we decided brick as the primary material. Brick is meaningful as humanity’s first building material. Furthermore, It’s a beautiful material to be applied to this building in that small cells gather to form a mass. It was also a suitable material to form a translucent layer on the south side facing a street, depending on a brickwork method.
많은 고민 끝에 흰색 흙을 소성해 구운 화이트 고갱이라는 벽돌을 주 재료로 결정하였고, 전면부 반투명 레이어에는 영롱 쌓기라는 조적식 방법이 있었지만, 개구부 스케일과 5층 높이의 쌓기 방법의 안전성 등이 증명되지 않아 새로운 재료를 개발하기로 했다. 동일한 물성을 지닌 흰색 흙으로 반투명한 느낌(영롱 쌓기보다 개구면이 더 넓은)의 새로운 형태의 브릭인 C블럭을 개발 하였다. 전면부의 거의 전부를 차지하고 있는 이 재료는 우성벽돌과 개발했으며, 구조적 안정성 등을 연구하는 과정이 흥미로웠다. 향후 프로젝트에도 많은 영향을 미칠것으로 기대한다.
After careful consideration, we used so-called white Gauguin bricks made of baked white bricks as the primary material. The facade translucent layer had a masonry structure of perforated brickwork. We decided to develop a new material because the safety of the opening scale and the masonry of the 5th-floor height were not proven. We developed a new type of brick, C Block, with white soil with the same physical properties and a translucent feeling (with a more full opening, instead of perforated brickwork). This material, which covers almost all of the facade, was developed together with WooSung Brick. Studying structural stability was interesting, and is expected to have a significant influence on future projects.
결과적으로 보면 설계과정에서 얻은 정보들이나 현장에서 닥치는 어려움들이 건축의 완성에 상당한 영향을 미친다는 것은 간과할 수 없는 현실이다. 그러나 건축가의 이 치열한 고민으로 인하여 탄생하는 건축물은 이용자가 쉽게 사용할수 있을 것이다. 나는 이 건물이 어떠한 변화에도 대응할 수 있는 쉬운 건축이길 바란다.
As a result, we can’t overlook the fact that the information obtained in the design process or the difficulties encountered in the site significantly affect the completion of architecture. But, the building created by the architect’s fierce consideration will be readily accessible to users. I hope this building will be comfortable architecture in response to any changes.
카멜레존Chamele zone은 카멜레온Chameleon과 존zone의 합성어로, 상황에 맞춰 용도를 변신하는 현대의 소비 공간을 일컷는 이른바 신조어이다. 변화무쌍한 건물의 주인과도 닮았으며 그리고 이건물이 서 있는 상수동과도 닮았다. 이 작은 건물이 동네의 문화적 밈(Meme)으로 자리하길 기대해 본다.
Chamele zone is compound word of Chameleon and zone, a so-called coinage that refers to a modern consumption space that transforms its use depending on the situations. It resembles both the kaleidoscopic building client and Sangsu-dong in which this building stands. I hope this small building will be a cultural meme of the neighborhood.
